1 & 2 Corinthians

These letters written two thousand years ago are as relevant today as they were in the first century: greed, selfishness, immorality, conflict, lawsuits, ethics, religious practices, financial abuses, power struggles—you name it, these letters have it all. Yet they are intensely spiritual in that the apostle relates all his wisdom and teaching back to the cross of Christ. In his own words: “For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” (1 Cor 2:2). See also 1 Cor. 1:17, 23. Put your seatbelt for lessons in growth toward spiritual maturity.

Preface to 1 & 2 Corinthians

The apostle Paul directed these two letters, 1 & 2 Corinthians, to a struggling church. While other local congregations wrestled with persecutions from unbelievers, this fellowship of believers was wracked with internal and personal issues, hamstringing...

Greet and ID – 1 Corinthians 1:1-2

Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord...

Grace and Peace – 1 Corinthians 1:3-6

Not Lacking Anything – 1 Corinthians 1:7-9

… so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His...

Unity is Missing – 1 Corinthians 1:10-11

Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by...

Personality Cults – 1 Corinthians 1:12-13

Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, “I am of Paul,” and “I of Apollos,” and “I of Cephas,” and “I of Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? Specificity was Paul’s order...

Christ Not Divided – 1 Corinthians 1:14-16

Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one would say you were baptized in my name. Now I did baptize also the...

Preaching the Gospel – 1 Corinthians 1:17

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. Making disciples was what Jesus sent His apostles to do, and that included baptism (Matt. 28:19). Paul talked...

Wisdom of the Gospel – 1 Corinthians 1:17-21

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the...

Greatness of God’s Foolishness – 1 Corinthians 1:22-25

For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because...

Out of Sync with the World – 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the...

Wisdom and RSS – 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.” The acronym RSS in internet lingo means “Really Simple...

Christ and Him Crucified – 1 Corinthians 2:1-2

And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. The most autobiographical of all his...

Model Preaching – 1 Corinthians 2:3-5

I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of...

Mysterious Wisdom – 1 Corinthians 2:6-8a

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the...

Amazing Wisdom – 1 Corinthians 2:8b-10a

… for if they had understood it [God’s wisdom] they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; but just as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those...

Nuanced Truth – 1 Corinthians 2:10-11

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit...

Knowing vs. Knowing About – 1 Corinthians 2:12-13

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining...

Natural vs. Spiritual Man – 1 Corinthians 2:14-16

But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one....

Milk vs. Solid Food – 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly....

Servants, Not Messiahs – 1 Corinthians 3:4-5

For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not mere men? What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. Applying his theology of “Christ and Him...

One for All, All for One – 1 Corinthians 3:6-9

Gift of Serving – 1 Corinthians 3:10-11

Brain Shelving? – 1 Corinthians 3:18-20

Required of Stewards – 1 Corinthians 4:1-2

For the Praise of God – 1 Corinthians 4:3-5

Last of the Parade – 1 Corinthians 4:9-10

"For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong;...

Canonical Detail – 1 Corinthians 5:9

Choosing Our Associations – 1 Corinthians 5:9-13

It’s Right to be Wronged – 1 Corinthians 6:7-8

Of Glory and Beauty – 1 Corinthians 11:1–16

We must not miss the positive truth that God highly esteems women and their beauty. Although the word “beauty” does not appear in this passage (1 Cor. 11:1–16), it is difficult not to see the comparison between God’s glory and the woman’s glory (reflected in...

Glory Through Conflict – 1 Corinthians 11:17–19

Examination Time – 1 Corinthians 11:28

'But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.' Examination goes hand in hand with the Lord’s Supper. No one else can do it for us; we must  scrutinize our own soul. To sit quietly and look contemplative in...

Consequence of LS Abuse – 1 Corinthians 11:29–30

Defer to One Another – 1 Corinthians 11:31-34a

Wait, Wait, There’s More- 1 Corinthians 11:34b

For the Love of the Body – 1 Corinthians 12:26

11For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12So death works in us, but life in you. As we pointed out earlier, this second letter of Paul’s is his most...

Belief Before Obedience – 2 Corinthians 4:13–15

13But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed, therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak, 14knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you. 15For all...

Eternal Weight of Glory – 2 Corinthians 4:16–18

16Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 17For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18while we look not at the...

A New Body Coming – 2 Corinthians 5:1–4

1For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3inasmuch as we,...

Anticipating Homecoming – 2 Corinthians 5:5–8

5Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge. 6Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith, not by sight— 8we are...

The Greatest Ambition – 2 Corinthians 5:9–10

9Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good...

Fear and Love – 2 Corinthians 5:11–15

11Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences. 12We are not again commending ourselves to you but are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so...

New Creature in Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:16–17

16Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away;...

Ambassadors for Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:18–20

18Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed...

Dynamic Substitution – 2 Corinthians 5:21

21He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. The message of reconciliation must be solidly established on truth so that we don’t just convey a feel-good gospel devoid of substance. In the...

Judicial Replacement – 2 Corinthians 5:21 (cont.)

21He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Debates have entertained theologians over the interpretation of this verse, because there is an important issue here. Some have suggested that...

Credible Grace-Living – 2 Corinthians 6:1–3

1And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain— 2for He says, “At the acceptable time I listened to you, And on the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is “the day of...

Sacrifice & Commitment – 2 Corinthians 6:4–10

… 4but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses, 5in beatings, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in hunger, 6in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in...

Toward Authenticity – 2 Corinthians 6:11–13

11Our mouth has spoken freely to you, O Corinthians, our heart is opened wide. 12You are not restrained by us, but you are restrained in your own affections. 13Now in a like exchange—I speak as to children—open wide to us also. Paul lays himself bare before...

Bound Together – 2 Corinthians 6:14–16a

14Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16aOr what...

Not Unequally Hitched – 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

14Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16Or what...

Pursuing Holiness – 2 Corinthians 7:1–4

1Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2Make room for us in your hearts; we wronged no one, we corrupted no one, we took advantage of no one. 3I do...

Discomfort of Confronting – 2 Corinthians 7:5–9

5For even when we came into Macedonia our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted on every side: conflicts without, fears within. 6But God, who comforts the depressed, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7and not only by his coming, but also by the comfort...

Power of Godly Sorrow – 2 Corinthians 7:10–12

10For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what...

Reason to Boast – 2 Corinthians 7:13–15

13For this reason we have been comforted. And besides our comfort, we rejoiced even much more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. 14For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I was not put to shame; but as we...

Macedonian Principle – 2 Corinthians 8:1–4

1Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, 2that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality. 3For I testify...

All or Nothing – 2 Corinthians 8:5

… 5and this, not as we had expected, but they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. Living is an all or nothing proposition! Well, actually, it is an “all” proposition or it is not giving at all. Paul teaches, using the Macedonians...

The Grace of Generosity – 2 Corinthians 8:6–7

6So we urged Titus that as he had previously made a beginning, so he would also complete in you this gracious work as well. 7But just as you abound in everything, in faith and utterance and knowledge and in all earnestness and in the love we inspired in you,...

Abundantly Wealthy – 2 Corinthians 8:8–9

8I am not speaking this as a command, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity of your love also. 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His...

Toward a Generous Heart – 2 Corinthians 8:10–12

10I give my opinion in this matter, for this is to your advantage, who were the first to begin a year ago not only to do this, but also to desire to do it. 11But now finish doing it also, so that just as there was the readiness to desire it, so there may be...

Share and Share Alike – 2 Corinthians 8:13–15

13For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction, but by way of equality— 14at this present time your abundance being a supply for their need, so that their abundance also may become a supply for your need, that there may be equality; 15as it...

Money Handling – 2 Corinthians 8:16–21

16But thanks be to God who puts the same earnestness on your behalf in the heart of Titus. 17For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest, he has gone to you of his own accord. 18We have sent along with him the brother whose fame in...

Tested, Found Diligent – 2 Corinthians 8:22–24

22We have sent with them our brother, whom we have often tested and found diligent in many things, but now even more diligent because of his great confidence in you. 23As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brethren, they are...

Provocation – 2 Corinthians 9:1–5

1For it is superfluous for me to write to you about this ministry to the saints; 2for I know your readiness, of which I boast about you to the Macedonians, namely, that Achaia has been prepared since last year, and your zeal has stirred up most of them. 3But...

Return on Investment – 2 Corinthians 9:6–7

6Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. While the...

Multiplying Grace – 2 Corinthians 9:8–11

Benefits of Liberality – 2 Corinthians 9:12–14

12For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God. 13Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of...

Faux Boasting – 2 Corinthians 10:1–2

1Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent! 2I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous...

Captivated Thoughts – 2 Corinthians 10:3–6

3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the...

Spiritual Superiority: Not! – 2 Corinthians 10:7

7You are looking at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ’s, so also are we. Bringing every thought into obedience to Christ applies to how...

The Tenor of Building – 2 Corinthians 10:8–11

8For even if I boast somewhat further about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame, 9for I do not wish to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. 10For they say, “His letters are...

Extreme Measures – 2 Corinthians 10:12–13

12For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. 13But we will not boast beyond our measure,...

Boasting in the Lord – 2 Corinthians 10:14–18

14For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for we were the first to come even as far as you in the gospel of Christ; 15not boasting beyond our measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but with the hope that as your faith grows,...

Painful Teaching Method – 2 Corinthians 11:1–3

1I wish that you would bear with me in a little foolishness; but indeed you are bearing with me. 2For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin. 3But I am afraid...

Asserting Apostleship – 2 Corinthians 11:4–6

4For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully. 5For I consider myself not in the least...

Love in Strange Clothes – 2 Corinthians 11:7–9

7Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you without charge? 8I robbed other churches by taking wages from them to serve you; 9and when I was present with you and was in need, I was not a...

Boasting in Love – 2 Corinthians 11:10–11

10As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be stopped in the regions of Achaia. 11Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! Paul boasts of his love for the Corinthians. There it is, right out in the open. And he calls on God as...

Apostolic Assertion – 2 Corinthians 11:12–15

12But what I am doing I will continue to do, so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. 13For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising...

Tolerate Spiritual Abuse – 2 Corinthians 11:16–20

16Again I say, let no one think me foolish; but if you do, receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little. 17What I am saying, I am not saying as the Lord would, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting. 18Since many boast...

Foolishness of Comparing – 2 Corinthians 11:21–23a

21To my shame I must say that we have been weak by comparison. But in whatever respect anyone else is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am just as bold myself. 22Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I....

Boasting In Suffering – 2 Corinthians 11:23–27

23Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. 24Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 25Three times I was beaten with...

Burden of the Churches – 2 Corinthians 11:28–30

28Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. 29Who is weak without my being weak? Who is led into sin without my intense concern? 30If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness....

Saving the Worst for Last – 2 Corinthians 11:31–33

31The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, He who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. 32In Damascus the ethnarch under Aretas the king was guarding the city of the Damascenes in order to seize me, 33and I was let down in a basket through a window in...

Uber-Boastworthy – 2 Corinthians 12:1–4

1Boasting is necessary, though it is not profitable; but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a man was caught...

Authentic Humility – 2 Corinthians 12:5–6

5On behalf of such a man I will boast; but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in regard to my weaknesses. 6For if I do wish to boast I will not be foolish, for I will be speaking the truth; but I refrain from this, so that no one will credit me with...

Thorn from God – 2 Corinthians 12:7–9

7Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! 8Concerning this I implored the Lord three...

Assertion of Apostleship – 2 Corinthians 12:10–12

10Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. 11I have become foolish; you yourselves compelled me. Actually I should have been...

Avoiding the Mud – 2 Corinthians 12:13–15

13For in what respect were you treated as inferior to the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not become a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong! 14Here for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I do not...

Motivation Challenged – 2 Corinthians 12:16–18

16But be that as it may, I did not burden you myself; nevertheless, crafty fellow that I am, I took you in by deceit. 17Certainly I have not taken advantage of you through any of those whom I have sent to you, have I? 18I urged Titus to go, and I sent the...

Fear of Failure – 2 Corinthians 12:19–21

19All this time you have been thinking that we are defending ourselves to you. Actually, it is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ; and all for your upbuilding, beloved. 20For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not...

Proof of Power – 2 Corinthians 13:1–3

1This is the third time I am coming to you. Every fact is to be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 2I have previously said when present the second time, and though now absent I say in advance to those who have sinned in the past and to all...

Real Spiritual Power – 2 Corinthians 13:3–4

… 3since you are seeking for proof of the Christ who speaks in me, and who is not weak toward you, but mighty in you. 4For indeed He was crucified because of weakness, yet He lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we will live...

Are You Really Saved? – 2 Corinthians 13:5

5Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test? Midst the aberrant behavior in which the folks at the church in Corinth are...

I Passed the Test! – 2 Corinthians 13:6

6But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test. Yes, it is glorious for someone to “test” and “examine” him or herself and conclude, “I’ve passed, and not failed.” But each one must do this for himself. Paul, when subjecting...

Completion – 2 Corinthians 13:7–9

7Now we pray to God that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear unapproved. 8For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth. 9For we rejoice when we ourselves...

The Goal – 2 Corinthians 13:10–11

10For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present I need not use severity, in accordance with the authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down. 11Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be...

Final Greetings – 2 Corinthians 13:12-14

12Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13All the saints greet you. 14The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Young believers focus with great interest on this admonishment to “Greet one...

The Big Idea – 1 & 2 Corinthians

Paul clearly laid out his operating principle in his ministry to the Corinthians. In fact, everything he taught is connected back to this truth. What is that truth? He states it three times in different words: For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to...
