General Epistles

The “General Epistles” refer to the books of James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1, 2, & 3 John, and Jude. Smaller in size, but no less inspired, these books capture a variety of truths, each distinct in its own way. They included the practical teachings of James (our Lord Jesus’ half-brother); the encouraging instructions of the apostle Peter to persecuted believers; the lofty and intimate reflections of the apostle John, the “disciple whom Jesus loved”; and the apostle Jude’s short (one chapter) but pointed letter about dealing with evil in the church.

James Who? – James 1:1

1James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings. The book of James has elicited considerable debate throughout Christian history. Martin Luther considered it a “strawy epistle” because of...

James, a Servant Like Paul – James 1:1 (cont.)

1James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings. The book of James is often set in contrast to the writings of the apostle Paul, yet both refer to themselves as “a bond-servant” of God...

Otherworldly Joy – James 1:2–3

2Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Right away James jumps into the present felt needs that are common to all Christians, dealing with the trials of life. Jesus had...

Why? Good Question! – James 1:4–5

4And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Patience, endurance,...

Doubtless Faith – James 1:6–8

6But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8being a double-minded man, unstable in all his...

Scribbles on a Brick – James 1:9–11

9But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; 10and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. 11For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower...

An Necessary Witness – James 1:12

12Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Endurance is a hallmark of genuineness. The Christian life is not a 100-yard dash but a...

Don’t Blame God – James 1:13–14

13Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. New believers find help from our passage...

Nip It in the Bud – James 1:14–15

14But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Temptation begins in the heart. Outside circumstances can influence us...

No Lie, God is Good – James 1:16–18

16Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. 18In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word...

Anger, Not So Righteous – James 1:19–20

19This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; 20for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. When Moses descended from Mount Sinai and saw the people worshiping a golden calf...

Humble Implantation – James 1:21

21Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. James brings the lofty principles of righteousness within reach for everyday life. Anger is just the first...

Being a Liberated Doer – James 1:22–25

22But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he...

Markers of Genuine Religion – James 1:26–27

26If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their...

The Unfaith of Favoritism – James 2:1–4

1My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. 2For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, 3and you...

Fellowship of the True Wealth – James 2:5–6a

5Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Despite his terseness, James refers to his readers as “beloved...

Disadvantages of Favoritism – James 2:6b–7

6. . . Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court? 7Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called? Showing favoritism toward the rich and famous only puts us at a disadvantage. When we kowtow to them, we concede...

The Law of the King – James 2:8

8If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. Does not James sound quite a bit like the Lord Jesus Christ? All three of the synoptic gospels (Matt. 19:19, Mark...

No Link Insignificant – James 2:9–11

9But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 11For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not...

A Merciful Love – James 2:12–13

12So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. 13For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. Keeping the law of love is not just a feeling, a spiritual warm glow. Nor is it just a...

Saving Faith Is Not Stagnant – James 2:14

14What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? James cuts to a biting, almost acerbic tone; he has been building up toward it. He calls the very faith into question of anyone who “has no works.” This...

Working Your Faith – James 2:15–16

15If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? James just asserted that “works”...

Integrity of Genuine Faith – James 2:17

17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. "Dead faith.” Stark, poignant, terse, authoritatively spoken. An oxymoron, a contradiction of terms: faith that is dead. How can that be? Of course, a dead faith is no faith at all; it is not...

Show Me Your Faith – James 2:18

18But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James pits two men arguing their perspectives on the relationship between faith and works. He begins with “someone”...

More Than Believing in God – James 2:19–20

19You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 20But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? As if the point had not already been adequately and convincingly made, James...

Importance of Inspired Words – James 2:21

21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? God is one (Deut. 6:4), completely unified in Himself and thus, by definition. He cannot contradict Himself, for that would be an inherent contradiction in...

Justifiable Righteousness – James 2:21 (cont.)

21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? This statement is completely true, and the apostle Paul would agree with it, as James uses it in context. Let’s look briefly at Abraham’s justification. Paul takes...

Faith and Works Together – James 2:22–23

22You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; 23and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God....

Faith and Works Go Together – James 2:24

24You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. Now James brings it all together to make his point (but then he follows it up with one more OT illustration). Clearly, he is writing to people with an OT background and understanding. All...

Faith Without Works Is Dead – James 2:25–26

25In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. Finishing out his brief treatise on...

Ambition to Teach – James 3:1

1Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. The subject turns to tongue control, an obvious metaphor for how we speak to people. This follows after James’ dealing with faith and works, and it...

All Have Sinned – James 3:2

2For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. No one is perfect; we all know that. The apostle John wrote similarly: “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving...

When Small Is Big – James 3:3–5a

3Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 4Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the...

Tongue on Fire – James 3:5b–6

5. . . See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by...

The Untamable Tongue – James 3:7–8

7For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. 8But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. That James speaks with hyperbole is without...

Of Relativism and Inauthenticity – James 3:9–12

9With it [the tongue] we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; 10from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. 11Does a fountain send out from...

Christian Wisdom – James 3:13

13Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. James' teaching up to now has been prophetic and authoritative, reminiscent of his divine half-brother, Jesus. Now, using words familiar to...

Case Study in Birthing Sin – James 3:14

14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. Behavior that does not demonstrate “gentleness in wisdom” (James 3:13) is abundantly evident. James lists four examples here, familiar to...

Fruit of Unwisdom – James 3:15–16

15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. Sometimes Christians ignore the biblical mandate to think wisely because they...

Keeping in Step with Wisdom – James 3:17–18

17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 18And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. Wouldn’t it be great to have...

Source of Arguments – James 4:1

1What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? Behind every human conflict lies an inner war. This passage is not to be taken simply as literary hyperbole; James is not using...

A Study in Wrong Motivation – James 4:2–3

2You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures....

Adulteresses, Really? – James 4:4

4You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Camping up his prophetic charge, James now equates acting on the temptation to...

God’s Jealousy – James 4:5

5Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? God is jealous for us. That may seem startling, since jealousy is usually considered a bad thing. How can God be jealous, when He is...

Grace Continually Greater – James 4:6

6But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” The truth of God’s jealousy for us carries enormous implications. Since He desires us so greatly, He lavishes us with His unmerited favor. That...

Submitting to the Good Gift Giver – James 4:7

Humble Entry to the Throne – James 4:8–10

8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the presence...

Don’t Weaponize God’s Word – James 4:11

11Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. One of the most common refrains among...

Do Not Judge – God Forbid! – James 4:12

12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor? Numerous epithets are given to our Lord in the NT epistles, including Apostle and High Priest of our confession (Heb. 3:1), Author...

Lord Willing, I Will . . . – James 4:13–15

Boast Only in the Lord – James 4:16

16But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Arrogance is bad, we all know that, as is some boasting. But not all boasting. The question is this: what are you boasting about? Arrogant boasting is bad—that’s undebatable! We would be...

If It’s Right, Do It- James 4:17

Unrelenting Rebuke to the Rich – James 5:6

Patiently Waiting for Him – James 5:7–8

Freedom of the Simple Truth – James 5:12

12But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment. This verse seems oddly out of place. Some suggest James is going into his...

Christ-Centered Teaching 1 John 4:2

2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God … We take John’s warning seriously; what we believe about God and Jesus Christ matters—and it matters a great deal. The contemporary movement...

Christ-Centered Teaching (cont.) 1 John 4:2–3

2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is...

Who’s on Your Playlist: 1 John 4:4–6

4You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 5They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God; he who knows God...

Ultimate Dividing Line 1 John 4:7–8

7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. While the apostle Paul wrote the eloquent sonnet on love (1 Cor. 13), John wrote with...

For the Love of God! 1 John 4:9

9By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Every Christian has been saturated with John 3:16, which is John’s gospel counterpart to our verse today: “For God so...

The Christian Command 1 John 4:10–11

10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. To describe the apostle John’s exposition on the love of God as the...

Ultimate Reciprocity of Love 1 John 4:12–13

12No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. Theology and relationship mix; truth informs behavior;...

On Good Authority 1 John 4:14

14We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. What would constitute sufficient proof that God sent Jesus to be the Savior? Scholars can verify with a high degree of historical certainty that an individual named...

Confessing and Abiding 1 John 4:15–16

15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. Confessing and...

Perfect Love & Eternal Security 1 John 4:17–18

17By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears...

The Initiative of Love 1 John 4:19

19We love, because He first loved us. God always takes the initiative, period. He started everything: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth . . .” (Gen. 1:1). And He continues to be the catalyst for all things happening. Like in a chess...

Moving Past Fraudulent Love 1 John 4:20–21

20If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his...

Loving All Christians 1 John 5:1

Evidence of Faith 1 John 5:2–3

Overcoming the World 1 John 5:4–5

4For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? Being born again, loving God, and loving others with...

The Physical Jesus Christ 1 John 5:6–8

6This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three that testify: 8the Spirit and the water and the...

Testimony of the Spirit 1 John 5:9–10

9If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that He has testified concerning His Son. 10The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made...

Assurance or Not? 1 John 5:11–12

11And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the...

Assurance, Yes! 1 John 5:11–12 (cont.)

11And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. God has spoken in His Word to give assurance to people who believe....

Eternal Life Assured 1 John 5:13

13These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. John speaks as clearly as possible, without ambiguity, flowery language, or big words. In today’s vernacular, he is saying, “Read...

Why Does It Matter? 1 John 5:14–15

14This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. Why does it matter whether...

Confidence in Prayer 1 John 5:14–15 (cont.)

Praying for Life 1 John 5:16–17

16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. 17All...

We Know . . . 1 John 5:18–19

18We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. 19We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. Four times in this chapter of 1 John, the...

We Know . . . (cont.) 1 John 5:20–21

20And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21Little children, guard yourselves from idols. As...

A New-Old Command 2 John 5–6

Incarnational Love 2 John 7–8

Love’s Intolerance 2 John 10–11

10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. The apostle John is relentless about tying love to correct...

Joy and Fellowship in the Word 2 John 12–13

12Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, so that your joy may be made full. 13The children of your chosen sister greet you. Closing this second letter, John’s...

Another Beloved Disciple 3 John 1–2

1The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. 2Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. The three letters of John were probably written from Asia circa A.D. 85–90, although the dates are...

Self-Promoting Leaders 3 John 9

9I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. Serving the Lord does not come without opposition. John was an apostle, authorized by the Lord Jesus Christ as an official witness of his life...

Marks of a False Teacher 3 John 9–10

9 . . . [Diotrephes] does not accept what we say.10For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his [Diotrephes] deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren,...

Contending for Genuine Faith Jude 3

Posers Will Be Judged Jude 5

Shudder at God’s Judgment Jude 6–7

Rational vs. Instinctive Jude 8–10

Woe to Pseudo-Christians Jude 11

11Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain . . . "Woe” is a word Jesus used repeatedly to lay out His definitive statement of condemnation. Rational argument and debate are over, judgment is certain, and forewarning is thrown down. This is not an idle...

Woe (cont.) Jude 11

11Woe to them! . . . [F]or pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. Christian ministry can be manipulated into a lucrative business, make no mistake about that. Abuses of leadership, such as today’s...

The General Letters – Conclusion
